Risk of Diabetes increases upon smoking cessation
Reported by the Annals of Internal Medicine, a study found that quitters of smoking had a 70% increase in the risk of developing type-2 diabetes in the first six years of cessation compared with non-smokers, most likely due to weight gain. However, the study stressed that smoking is a well-known risk factor for type-2 diabetes, and these findings should not be an excuse to continue the habit. Following nearly 11,000 middle aged adults for up to 17 years, the study found the risk highest in the first three years after quitting smoking. Martin Dockrell of the anti-smoking charity Ash, commented that a little exercise could help reduce weight gain and undo some of the harm caused by smoking.
